Full Match Report

A boisterous crowd of 3,128 braved the rainy conditions to watch what turned out to be an epic encounter between fierce North American rivals Canada and the United States.

The two sides came into the match tied 1-1 in the 4 match Colonial Cup Series after the US took game two in Philadelphia two weeks prior.  Both sides came out aggressive and angry, with big hits from both sides setting the tone early.

It took twelve minutes for the first points to be put on the board.  It was the USA that took the initiative, a fifth tackle grubber in the corner from fullback Taylor Welch was pounced on by a diving Louis Tulio.  Five minutes later the US were at it again, Brent Shorten with a self chip which took a fortuitous bounce to score a wondrous solo try.  Welch added the extras to make it 10-0.

The USA extended their lead 5 minutes before the break when Welch's quick inside pass found Shorten who went in for his brace.  The halftime score read USA 14 Canada 0.

After the restart the USA continued to mount the pressure and scored again within 4 minutes.  Casey Clarke touched down from 2 metres out to extend the US advantage.

Five minutes later the USA added more points when Welch's grubber in the corner was latched onto by Tulio for his brace.  The try being almost a carbon copy of his first half effort.

The whitewash looked well and truly on when ten minutes later Phil Lauria charged down a 5th tackle Canadian kick and ran it in himself for the touchdown.  That made the score 28-0.

A fire was finally ignited in the Wolverines camp and momentum began to swing towards the Canadians.  They began driving down the field with authority and finally broke the plain half way through the second half.

Chris Diamond finding Louis Robinson who went in with flair and then converting the extras to make the score 28-6.  This brought the side to life and they were over again 2 minutes later.  Jamie Lester finding Ben Fleming who went through the gap to score on his debut for Canada.  Robinson added the extras to make the score 28-12.

Canada continued to see red, and were over again in spectacular style.  Matt Wyles lofting in a perfectly weighted chip in goal that was latched onto by Christian Miller.  Miller then turned provider after a long run he offloaded to Robin Legault who went in for the final try of the evening.

An epic comeback but in the end the USA took game 3 28-20.  USA is up 2-1 in the series with a 92-72 advantage with the victory and Canada will need to win Game 4 by 21 or more points to capture their first ever Colonial Cup Championship.

Game 4 will take place on Saturday September 28th at 7pm at Lamport Stadium.
