Heavy rain in South Wales has led to this weekend’s rugbyleague.com European Cup match between Serbia and Italy being moved from Bridgend to the Old Parish at Maesteg.
The match had been scheduled to kick off the European Cup finals day at Brewery Field but with two other fixtures – Lebanon v Ireland and the rugbyleague.com European Cup final between Wales and Scotland – taking place on the same pitch, organisers have decided on the change of venue to protect the pitch.
Commenting on the move, Tournament Director Kevin Rudd said, “It is not an ideal situation but the weather has worked against us.
“It was always a consideration for the tournament organising team with a triple header planned for this time of year and location.
“Maesteg was our contingency which we are being forced to use and we are grateful to them for their support.”
“All the team managements were aware of the possibility but those of Italy and Serbia have been incredibly supportive which is indicative of the spirit and enthusiasm they have brought to the competition.
The rugbyleague.com European Cup Finals Day offers a unique chance to see six International Rugby League teams in one day and fans of the International game are being urged not to miss this opportunity. Transport will be provided between the grounds for those with a match ticket.
The rugbyleague.com European Cup final will be screened live on Sky Sports 3 with coverage starting at 3.30pm.
The ranking match between Lebanon and Ireland will help determine the seedings for the 2010 European Cup, when France will join the competition with the prospect of the 2010 European Cup winners qualifying for the 2011 Four Nations tournament alongside England, New Zealand and Australia.
The relegation fixture sees Italy face Serbia to determine who will drop down to the European Shield competition next year.
